Croatia is selling homes that are cheaper than the famous Italian 1€ homes!

Italy started it - now Croatia joins in?

The trend of offering homes at affordable prices, a phenomenon that initially gained traction in Italy, is now making headlines in Croatia. The town of Legrad, once home to the second-largest population in Croatia, has seen a decline in residents due to shifting borders following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

In response to this demographic decline, Legrad officials have taken the unique approach of listing abandoned houses for sale at an astonishingly low price of just 16 cents. To be eligible for this opportunity, potential buyers must meet certain criteria, including being under 40 years old, fully employed, and committed to residing in the purchased home for a period of 15 years.

Legrad's transformation: From border town to vibrant community?

Legrad, which currently has a population of 2500, half of what it was 70 years ago, has actively embraced this initiative to revitalize the town. The Mayor, Ivan Sabolic, attributes the population decline to Legrad's transformation into a border town. In an effort to attract new residents and reinvigorate the community, officials are not only selling these abandoned houses at a symbolic price but also offering additional incentives. Buyers are provided with 3983 dollars for repairs, and out of the 19 properties listed, 17 have already found new owners.

Furthermore, for those inclined to purchase private homes, the town is extending its support by covering 20% of the cost, up to 5570 dollars. This multi-faceted approach aims not only to address the decline in population but also to foster community growth and rejuvenation in Legrad.
